Mission Results Week 17
« on: April 26, 2021, 07:35:11 pm »
Mission: Week #17
Mission type: Ground Strike, suspected V1 Missile Launch Base
Date Flown: 4/26/21
Version used: Vp Modact
Mission results: Survived, x3 enemy AAA destroyed, 9x train cars destroyed, 1x enemy fuel tank farm destroyed, 800 pts

After Action Review (AAR):

We recieved orders to strike and destroy a suspected V1 missile launch site south of Le Havre. Once again we were armed to the teeth with 2x1000 bombs and rockets. We also had full tanks of gas. Today the group was broken up into two/two plane sections. We departed the airfield without incident. Our orders stated that we had to maintain low level flight, below 500 feet to the target area. Hoping to avoid the enemy's radar.

We were to fly to a point where we saw a lighthouse along the eastern coastline, once spotted we were to turn southeast. We continued our route to a small forested area. Once there we turned south. It wasn't long when we saw the target area. A large open field area. The first I saw was a large formation of fuel tanks. I dropped my bombs of these and ordered the group to attack ground targets, "all".

I scored a direct hit of the fuel tanks. I then proceeded to attack the AAA located at the site. I used my rockets, destroying 3x AAA guns. The rest of the section was working over the site destroying numerous ground vehicles and facilities. We must have arrived to the target area just after the enemy launched a V1 salvo, the launch rails were empty of missiles. I did see an enemy supply train trying to reach the target area for safety, it didn't make it.

I unloaded the last of my rockets into the train. I was lucky to survive. The train exploded in a large fireball sending shrapnel into my aircraft. My rudder became sluggish and I had two large fuel leaks. It was time to head home. I ordered the group to reform on me and we turned for home base. I took a steady line home instead of following the flight plan, this was to save as much fuel as I could as we had a long way to go.

On the way home, one pilot from a plane in section #2 had to bail out. He had control damage and fuel leaks as well. He was able to bail-out over "friendly" lines. We continued reaching our home base. The rest of us were able to land safely. I parked under the maintenance tent, I had about 10 gallons left in my fuels tanks. My crew chief said he could have her fixed in less then a week, just in time for the next mission.

Notes: Kudos once again Haukka, another great and exciting mission !!!  Well done Sir.  :)

Excellent, DH! I still haven't flown this, but I plan to do it tomorrow. I hope the pilot who bailed from your second flight is able to return to your unit. Thanks for the thrilling report and pics, M8!!!

Congratulations DHumphrey!, I think you have earned your pass to the next war scene. Thank you once again for your enthusiastic participation and for your generous concepts.

PS: That train was running away from you for two weeks, it seems that you finally found it.
;)

Actual Mission Name: Y2021 - Week 17 / Op. Crossbow
Date single mission actually flown: APRIL 26, 2021
Mission Score: 56 points
Misc. Info if desired: Mission flown in BAT BLUE EDGE 1.2.3
Results/description of mission: KIA

Mission report: After taking off, we flew to the coast and then east. As we passed the Dives Sur Mer coastal lighthouse, we turned south, avoiding roads and towns so as not to be detected. We fly very low, almost skimming the treetops. We reached the northern edge of the vast forest where the German base was hidden. From a couple of miles we could see thick plumes of steam rising. We took a little height, while I ordered my boys to take care of destroying everything they found. On my first flyby over the target, I dropped both bombs. I don't know what it was that I destroyed, because soon the whole place was burning like hell. Two of my boys were immediately shot down by the intense antiaircraft. I didn't know more about the third of my pilots. I made a wide detour and attacked from the east, discovering that a train was about to reach the base. I attacked it once with one or two rockets, and the locomotive stopped moving, but its gunners kept firing furiously. I made another turn around the area, and fired several rockets blindly, through the smoke from the target, trying to hit the launchers. In a new attack on the train, also with rockets, the formation catches fire and explodes completely. As I turned my head to watch the wagons full of supplies and ammunition go up in flames, a cannon shot destroyed my plane. I could not jump. End of my report.

After Mission Report
Low-Level V-1 Site
Ground Attack*

Readied our aircraft for takeoff at 05:30. Very hazy morning! It took a couple of tries to get my #2 engine started. Flying with new paint job, "Death's Companion", and feeling very fortunate not to be in the confinement facilities. Seems all there is to do there is play chess. C.O. admitted he was just too in need of pilots for this mission to leave me and one of my squadmates there. We are still facing discipline for last week's antics. (It's hard to tell a King from a Queen when you had to mold the chess pieces out of bits of bread.)

Following the coast to Dives Sur Mer, we then turned South and wiggled our way around until we could approach our target site from the North, crossing the expanse of forested ground to surprise the hidden enemy. I had a good bomb-drop, and destroyed several vehicles. I ordered the flight to follow suit, and they all had good luck striking targets.

Feeling a bit confident, I decided to make a second pass. By now the smoke from the first run was everywhere, and blowing around the entire target area, making for a blind pass.* I was hit by ground fire, and blindly let loose a blind volley into the general direction of the site. Engine #1 was on fire. Across the radio came screams of "I'm hit!", and "I'm on fire!" from two others in my flight. I tried to activate the fire extinguisher, but to no avail and was forced to belly-land. No enemy ground troops in sight. Lucky me!

A kindly old lady who lived nearby was happy to hide me for a day. I hid in the back of her husband's wagon and was transported to the nearest allied unit, evading capture.

*(This was my first time using WxTech's newly released effects pack, which causes smoke to be blown by the wind, among other things. Still testing, but very cool!)

Haukka, those pics are great! It seems that you've paid the ultimate price for your bravery and are redeemed. (Taps plays in the background)

Haukka and Bird, sorry to hear about your mission. Haukka, my condolences to your family on your demise at that hands of that ruthless flak. Bird, glad to hear you were able to escape with the help of those friendly farmers. I'm also sorry to hear about your mates being lost as well. The Huns guarded that target well with their flak guns, their gunners must have been the best in their service.

We will avenge our losses with the next mission, we will make them pay dearly !!!  :)
Sincerely,
DHumphrey

Thanks Bird for your descriptive and fun report. I have seen those fumes, and I have also used them for photographs. I didn't expect to find so much smoke there. What was a small, thin column of white smoke in the original mission became a thick, wide column. Still the performance is very good compared to other effects.

Indeed, that nest of German rockets was heavily guarded. Your mission, Bird, and mine are practically the same: I also lost two pilots in the first pass.

DHumphrey, you are the winner again. Congratulations to both of you for participating and for the good spirit you put into it.  ;) ;)
