Mission results week 50
« on: December 06, 2020, 03:56:21 pm »
Date 061220
Vpmod version
Beaufighter 21
Recce over North Africa coast.
Results 1500 points. two and a half kills (actually one and three shared)
Debrief
Following recent advice i kept my throttle down to 60% after take-off and thus suffered no overheats. Soon after take-off I spotted a formation of grey dots in the distance just as the flak started. I ordered the flight to attack 'bombers' and we swept in on the transports. I kept my throttle at 60%, saving it for a boost if fighters appeared. I found from experience to keep a respectful distance from gunners so after coming in too fast I took my time and circled under the formation. They are large and tough cookies but I managed to down one then shared the lethal damage on three more before I ran out of ammo. I then realised i still had my rockets and went after the survivors, joined by Curly Larry and Moe. (I thought I heard their call sign Nyuk Nyuk). As I lined up, a flak burst took out my control so I could not fire the rockets. Some Bf109s and at least one Bf110 appeared so I ran for home, landing back at base in one piece. I only saw two surviving transports so well done flight.

Thanks for the advice DH.
A good choice again Haukka. I hope the boys survived their time off filming. The enemy must have died laughing.

Excellent mission, Lars. Survival is the main thing. The decision to return home as soon as the bad guys appeared was the most correct. The fruits of practice are beginning to show. Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation.

Well done Lars ... a great mission you've recorded, Congrats !!!

I flew this mission just a few minutes ago ... excellent mission and fun. "Turkey Shoot"  :)

Mission # 50
Date flown: 12/6/2020
Aircraft: Beaufighter Mk21, armed with rockets
Results: 1 ship destroyed and 11 enemy aircraft destroyed
Total: 6700 points

After Action Review (AAR):

Took off from our home airbase without incident. On climb out my group flew past a C-47 heading north. The group reached the coast when I detected an enemy ship. Knowing I'm armed with rockets I made an attack. The weather on the deck was quite foggy, I still pressed my attack.

Target Destroyed

While I was engaged with the enemy ship, I ordered the group to attack enemy aircraft. After confirming the ship was destroyed I also engaged the enemy bombers, Me-323s. I was able to approach them from their 6 o'clock position.

I was able to engage and destroy my first bomber, the tail gunner hit my cockpit and knocked out my gunsight and put a few holes in my windshield. I also was hit in my starboard fuel tank, but that sealed itself later as the mission went on. I continued the fight.

For me it was a "Turkey Shoot" as I went through their formation. I hit and destroyed four bombers on my first pass. Some, their wings came off. Others, they just blew up. The Beaufighter's cannons are quite good.

I was able to expend all my ammunition and then turned for home landing safely.

Mission Results

Sincerely,
DHumphrey

Extraordinary mission! Congratulations! Not only have you eliminated the naval objective, but you have also caused a big mess there. Germans must still be wondering what happened. I don't think they'll get over their shock in a whole week. Again, a very difficult result to beat. I promise I will try. However, I do not promise that I will achieve it. Greetings, Comrade!

Wow DH. You are really setting the benchmark. Nice to see someone else loses their gunsight on the first hit. Despite keeping my throttle down my right engine still seized eventually and the left was smoking from gunners fire. If I had fired at half the distance I would probably have got more but those gunners are nasty.

Lars and Haukka, thanks for your kind comments ... very much appreciated.  :)

Mission note: I closed to within .20 - .25 before I open fired. I used short bursts only from that range. Normally it took only two (2-3 sec) bursts to bring down one of those Me-323 bombers.
Sincerely,
DHumphrey

Member Name/callsign: E69_Haukka
Actual Mission Name: Week 50 / Recon the Coastline
Date single mission actually flown: Wednesday, December 09, 2020
Results/description of mission: Mission accomplished like in the movies  ;D
Mission Score: 4800 points, I think these guys pay per motor sent ashore.
Misc. Info if desired:

Debrief:

I was commissioned to conduct a coastal patrol, searching for possible German supply entrances to the desert shores of the southern Mediterranean. The morning greeted us with a dense fog that rose as the hours passed. By the time we took off, the fog was felt like a thin gauze in the lower layers of the atmosphere. As soon as we climbed a bit, the air became clear and crystal clear.

We crossed the front line after the last town. A few minutes later we were greeted by anti-aircraft fire. I tried to see where those shots were coming from, but could not recognize their source. At that moment I saw a large formation of huge German transports, hidden in the fog, flying at no more than 700 meters of altitude, perhaps less. The first thing I did was order the attack. I left the hunting boys freedom of action, who took charge of the enemy escort. I confess that at no time did I go to the German fighters. Our three veterans must have done their job very well. I dedicated myself to flying among the great birds, making some correct entries, and many others not so good or recommended, such as several entries through the six direct lines of the Me-323 transports. Still, the Beaufighter's cannons are lethal. The German gunners located on the extrados of the gigantic wings, reached my cockpit glasses and the sight of my collimator. Still I managed, first aiming the machine guns that fired pink tracers, and then unleashing cannon shots that destroyed wings, elevators, fuselages.

When my boys gave the warning, late in the battle, that enemy fighters were in sight, I decided to get out of there. I slipped into the mountains and returned to base. My landing was not very graceful, but I did not break the plane. I was later told that I shot down a total of eight transports. I am more than satisfied with the result.

We still have work to do with this plane. For now we will rest until the boss calls us again.

Cheers

PS: there are no photos today, but there is a little movie. Free popcorn.

Well done Haukka !!! ... Excellent mission and a great video !!!  :)  You made some great firing passes. Looks like you had a "Turkey Shoot" as well. Also, you are correct, you earn 100 points per engine. So, those large Me-323s are worth 600 points each. :) Ships are also worth 100 points each.
Sincerely,
DHumphrey

Date Dec 11
Vp modpack
Beaufighter 21
Recce over North Africa coast.
Results 1910 points. 3 aircraft and one AA battery
Debrief

I had a pretty good run this time. It was so exciting that I forgot to take screen shots.  I attacked the Me-323s first. I managed to get three of them but either one of their gunners, or a Bf-109 shot me up pretty good. My rear gunner was killed but the plane was flyable though damaged. Discretion was the better part of valor at that point so I was headed home when I saw the airfield below me. I took one pass and fired rockets everywhere, hitting one AA battery. Much fun to be had here!

Member Name/callsign: Beowolff
Actual Mission Name: Week 50 / Recon the Coastline
Date single mission actually flown: 3/17/2021
Results/description of mission: Mission accomplished.  Survived.  Personal plane damaged, two props and one landing gear and some gunfire damage, plane is recoverable.  Lost one pilot from my section, Yellow Four, apparently snagged a mountaintop and crashed either plane damage or pilot error.
Mission Score: 6000 points, 10 kills

Misc. Debrief:

Information:
Nice and easy takeoff, climb to mission altitude, set course for recon target area, spotted enemy transport and ordered my lads to attack as I dove into the fray myself.  Instant gratification as I bagged a big bird (what monstrosities these planes are!)  Then another, and another, like shooting fish in a barrel.  One by one they fell to my guns and even my lads bagged a few.  I took some damage from an enemy fighter but continued the fight as he was a coward and ran away every time I turned to confront him.

The last two transports I took out with my rockets.  Great fun to see them ripped apart by the explosions!  Take that, Huns!  A fresh bottle of brandy at my quarters tonight in celebration!

(*Additional notes:  I continue to have trouble landing this big beast of a fighter!  Of course I had some fair amount of damage this time but still I shouldn't have nosed her over like that!  I must get some extra training on landings with this bird!)

You cannot lie, cheat or steal your way to honor.  Honor lies in friendship, trust and loyalty, in truth  when you spit upon those great and wonderful things, you are doomed to a failure of the soul of the worst sort.  You are truly damned.
