Actual Mission Name: BattlePoints Mission #2
Date single mission actually flown: 1/25/2020
Results/description of mission: success (1 Kill, (mosquito, I believe= 200 points) on the negative side I did crack up on landing, my fault, not the plane. I misjudged the 'bounce' of the terrain at the TD point and popped my gear...still, slid to a stop with minimal damage. Plane is repairable.
Mission Score: 1 Kill = 200 points
Misc. Info if desired: *See below
Okay... was more careful this go round, though still having a bit of trouble orientating myself. Good and solid takeoff, followed original waypoints, climb to high altitude, roughly 2500k, spotted the enemy planes, a fairly large group of what looked like Mosquito fighter bombers... ordered my men to attack ALL, then pulled around to port, shoved the throttle forward and dropped towards the enemy that had just passed me.
At high speed I slipped in behind them as they turned towards my island airdrome installation, got close...maybe too close...but was able to open up with effective fire on my target. About three solid bursts from all guns and the enemy plane smoked heavily and began wobbling in the air, I fired again and it burst into bright, yellow flames in one engine --then fell from formation on his starboard wing and vanished from my immediate sight. I ignored him knowing he was mortally damaged and then immediately lined up on another enemy and began firing... this guy seemed to have a force field around him for I pumped hundreds of rounds into him and all he did was smoke!
G'ah! Disgusted after exhausting my ammo with no major results, I got the HELL out of the battle and dove AWAY from the main action keeping a close eye on my rear for sneak attackers.
I then dropped to about 500k or so, circled the island, located the field and lined up with the windblown runway for an unhurried, three-point landing.... and as I said earlier, it would/should have been great as everything was looking good on field approach; I was relaxed but alert, I had flaps down and my speed was correct ---but then I accidently touched down a 'bit' out from the runway (only a few yards maybe) and bounced very hard, and instantly broke a landing strut...tipping over on that side and slipping/sliding to a dusty, smoking stop (likely seized the engine from the bent prop.)
Damaged gear, damaged prop, ---maybe an engine overhaul but the plane was definitely repairable. My mech wasn't going to be happy though!
From the look of it, my guys either nailed the enemy attacking and or chased them away. The day was saved. No major damage to the field/installation or nearby ships.
Great fun! And nice to finally score some points even if I did damage my plane. Yep, smashed starboard gear...bent prop...fixable! And with a kill and a heavy damage under my belt!
But most of all I survived again! I must write to my wife in Berlin and brag of my prowess! Some snapshots of my handiwork!
Hard landing! But alive! Finally! A kill! And by the book, up close and personal from the 6:00 o'clock classic kill position...out of the sun with altitude and speed advantage.Heute ein Sieg für das Vaterland!*Geschwader records one confirmed enemy kill for this pilot and once again notes his bravery. Due to damage of plane upon landing, again additional training recommended.
