Member Name/callsign:  Beowolff
Actual Mission Name: Cactus Fighters of Guadalcanal Mission 06
Date single mission actually flown:  2/10/2020
Results/description of mission:  Failure (dead as a doornail, smashed into the sea) though on the plus side I 'did' nail one Rufe before smashing into the sea!
Mission Score:  10 (lousy points for shooting down a Rufe...evidently my enemy kill LOST points due to my bungling and killing myself!   ??? :-[  )
Misc. Info if desired:  *See below

DEAD DEAD DEAD!  Yeppers... took off from Guadalcanal perfectly, flew exactly to target, spotted smoke flares from the downed sailors.... all great... then, as enemy floaters flashed in, I quickly latched onto one that overshot, whipped my chubby Wildcat around in a tight turn and shot him to hell!  ---Then immediately slammed into the sea and died!   >:(

Apparently, as my wingman and I were flying low and slow to try and spot the downed airmen, we had gotten lower than I realized (my stupid fault!)  And no doubt I also lost precious altitude as I tightly turned to latch onto the Rufe…. results?  By not realizing how low I was, by the time I hammered the Rufe into a blaze of fire I was TOO low to pull up.  SLAM into the ocean and kaput!  No chance to survive.  And I LOST points for my kill I guess due to my stupidity and death...I would have thought a clean kill like that would have given me more points...ah, well...so it goes.

Guess I'll watch my altitude NEXT mission, eh?   :P

Beo

PS, nice mission...heads up, takes a bit to spot the downed crew and to wait for the Rufes to get there...don't get overeager.   ;)

Callsign Larsresult
Mission Name Cactus Fighters of Guadalcanal Mission 6
Date actually flown 2/11/2020
Results Mission Complete after saving my wingman from the pesky third Rufe several times.
Mission score 250 Two Rufes then ran out of ammo.
Misc info
Set off with my wingman and kept to around 1000ft to spot the downed airmen. Saw the white smoke and started circling. My engine went into overheat and stayed like that for the rest of the mission even if I reduced throttle to 30%. Soon two Rufes appeared, one staying high while the other tried to lure us away at low level. I ordered my wingman to attack fighters but he said 'unable'. So I climbed and was drawn into a stall by the higher Rufe. I sprayed him with seemingly no effect, but shortly after the message came up 'Aircraft Destroyed'. As my wingman was still 'unable' I went after the lower Rufe and flamed him although he still tried to strafe the target. He went into the sea shortly after. A third Rufe turned up and started trying to down my wingman so I jumped on his tail despite having no ammo left. I managed to distract the Rufe with a few passes until the message 'Mission Complete' came up. I probably could have received more points if I had flown back to base but I ran out of real time so had to quit.

Good job!  I really regret acting a fool and lousing up my own run!   >:(

Thanks to your warning I nearly did the same when the first Rufe passed under me and I turned too tightly. Pesky little varmints.

Actual Mission Name: Cactus Fighters of Guadalcanal Mission 06
Date single mission actually flown: 2/21/2020
Results/description of mission: FAILURE, MISSION OVER, Primary target failed
Mission Score: 200
Misc. Info if desired: *See below

*********************************************

Time 0:20 Start of mission. My partner gives power and starts his take-off run without waiting for me. The base is being bombed.
Time 0:36 While I'm in the takeoff run, a truck crosses absentmindedly in front of my plane. I think that the control of smuggling of whiskey at the base will have to be taken very seriously.
Time 4:18 We have set course for the place of rescue. Flight near my partner, to confirm that the course is correct: 349°

time 10:12 We have followed the waipoints "by eye", estimating the distances, but there is no sign of our objective, we set course for Guadalcanal for a couple of minutes, to restart the search;
Time 12:12 Again we are heading for 350°. Both, me and my partner, we are using a pair of binoculars to see better, but we do not see signs of the fallen pilots;
Time 12:29 They should be around here, but where? The sea is immense, why don't they send signals?
Time 13:15 The worst news we could receive is there, ringing on the radio: they tell us that the pilots have been killed, we have failed our mission, we have taken too long and we have never found them ... it is terrible ... At this moment images of absurd death pass through my mind, good men floating helpless, shot to death by Rufe ... I was about to turn around to go to my tent to drown in disgusting sake confiscated, but a mute voice said to me to continue forward, as if no tragedy had been said on the radio.

Time 13:49 Our intuition was correct, before one minute, my point indicates that we have fighters at one o'clock. Soon to see the first, a Rufe that comes directly to me.
Time 14:08 I don't like frontal maneuvers, but here I have an advantage: if I reach the Rufe´s fuel tank, I may see a nice show: shot
time 14:10 shot
time 14:23 I don't know if I hurt him, I keep going, now I face the second Rufe; I start shooting from afar,
time 14:24 The second rufe burns like a torch, meanwhile, I have lost sight of the first one;

Time 14:44 First plane shot down confirmed.
time 15:21 now I have eye contact again with the Rufe who is still in flight, I go to him;
Time 16:05 the enemy plane loses fuel, so I have touched it at the first crossing;
time 16:45 the Japanese jumps out of his plane, immediately, the plane catches fire;
time 17:21 the second flying torch falls out of control...

time 17:56 I resume the search, I know that I will then receive a reprimand for this, but I need to know more about our pilots;
time 17:59 my point sings fighters at four o'clock, but I don't see them; my partner says that he will take care of Japanese;
timne 18:54 Rufe climbs like a demon, but everything that goes up must also come down, my partner waits for him below;
time 19:27 my boy burns the Japanese;

Time 19:48 below, another Rufe catches fire in the water, it is evident that his pilot has skillfully maneuvered to get to land, and not break his neck in the attempt.
time 20:22 the Rufe burned by my partner has just landed gently in the water, my congratulations to that brave young samurai;

time 23:09 back to the search, but without hope;
Time 23:23 Second Japanese plane shot down confirmed. He has been burning all this time slowly while floating in the ocean. The pilot has been saved. This is strange, I thought I saw him jump before...
time 27:11 I get quite close to the enemy island, but I don't see movement, so I move away towards Guadalcanal;
time 35:10 landed in Guadalcanal
Time 39:10 I turn off the engine, after having left the plane parked between palm trees.
